Applying Mathematics Outside the Classroom

Math is a subject which many students find challenging. The first expectation that we will be working on in the classroom is reading,representing,comparing,and ordering whole numbers to 50,and using concrete materials to investigate fractions and money amounts.
Parents- to help students practice these concepts outside the classroom, have students count change while making small purchases at the store.

Grade 1 Health

In grade one health education students are expected to understand Healthy Eating. Students should be able to name a few examples of food that fit into each food group. The following website includes games related to health for students play with:

Pizza Day

The school will be having pizza day the last Friday of month. We will be having cheese and pepperoni pizza. Pizza forms were sent home student today with students and will be due back by next Monday. The pizza will cost $2 a slice.

BITSTRIPS

Over the year we will be working on many web2.0 learning sites. One resources which students and parents may find useful is BITSTRIPS. This site can be used to create graphic stories and pictures based on classroom content. I will be encourage students to use this resource and I will link stories created to students on this blog.

The Hamilton Wentworth District School board website is a useful resource to learn about upcoming events within the educational community.
Another useful website to look at is the Ministry of Education website which is filled with a huge amount of resources to help students.

Tip for parents: All curriculum documents are available on the Ministry of Education website. You can also order the curriculum documents and many other documents free of charge.
